quizzes. had korean quiz today. i think i died there. my nick was "i feel like eating yoghurt." so my friend, Sam, told me, eating yoghurt hurts your stomach. i was like, nooo!! it's super super super nice! he replied, my first try at eating yoghurt gave me stomachaches, and after which, he never touched yoghurt anymore. hahahahah. so psy la! this is an example of classic conditioning. to be specific- taste aversion. i'm going to have HP102 quiz tmr. i think i'm not going to make it back in one piece again. studying at the eleventh hour is useless. 9:23 AM Monday, September 15, 2008
SLEEP There's a quiz tomorrow and I'm basically rushing through my textbook now. I'm on the chapter on states of consciousness, and I'm reading the part on sleep disorders. Some of the common sleep disorders:
[Edited] Once or twice, during childhood, I had experienced bedwetting. I'm sure many of us had this experience before. Haha. Bedwetting can be a serious problem if it happens too many times. Mine happened basically because I dreamt of going to the toilet when my brain was actually telling me my bladder was full. Bedwetting happens commonly among children because they have not developed abilities to wake up when the bladder is full or hormones to suppress urine production at night fully. But of course, bedwetting can be caused by many reasons. I had nocturnal leg cramp once. It was super painful, and the worst was, I couldn't wake up to ease the pain. I was screaming and shouting in my sleep, but actually my brain was fully aware of the pain. Eventually my dad came and massaged my foot (and I could clearly remember it was the left foot). Haha. When I was in NYJC, there was this guy who would sleep during the day. In lectures or during breaks, we could all see him sleeping. His upper body would curl in a weird way, and yet he slept soundly through the whole lecture. WHY?! Hahaha. Was he partially conscious during this kind of sleep?? I heard he scored quite well. Sleep is so interesting. Is this hypersomnia? I remembered one of my friends told me that a teacher said that was Narcolepsy. People suffering from it may fall asleep at inappropriate places and at inappropriate times. (In narcolepsy, the person may slip suddenly into REM sleep during the day especially when the person experiences strong emotions- quoted from my PSY textbook again.) Looks like it's probably not narcolepsy?? 3:30 AM Monday, September 08, 2008
HP101 today's HP101 lecture- Memory. another interesting and exciting lecture. our lecturer, also my tutor, Dr Cha, did many little experiments with us in LT today. there are three key processes of Memory: Encoding, Storage and Retrieval. on the part of encoding, he asked "what is on the flip side of our $5 bill?" one student said "tree." another said "i think it's children, buildings, ppl playing some sports." haha. answer is it's a heritage tree found in Botanical Gardens, and this tree is in the bill because this tree holds many fond memories of our grandparents' when they were young. lesson learnt- we do not remember because we never pay attention to it. visually, we are able to remember 7 plus/minus 2 items. this is the iconic memory (subset of Sensory memory). he flashed 7 alphabets in like one-over-twenty second, and we were asked to recall what we saw. surprisingly, we got the 7 alphabets right. next he flashed 16 alphabets. we were asked to recall again. this time, we could not get many right. so cool. last attempt, he flashed: NUSNTUSMUSIMUSNW we all got it right. haha. our brain is wonderful. we just did chunking. grouping of words together. this is what experts do. research showed that chess experts were able to better remember the chess pieces at their right positions when the pieces were put in a meaningful way. but when the chess pieces were not put in a meaningful manner, chances are, a less experienced chess player could remember better than the expert. this is because the expert is more familiar in this domain, and they rmb by chunking, relying on schema, forming meanings out of these chunks, so when the pieces were placed out of order, they found it harder to remember. there were lots more of stuffs that he did with us, showed us. heh heh. back to doing blk 48 design. 8:06 PM |
